Grey Lady Indeed

Today's offering is from Cisco Brewers on Nantucket. I hear there was once a man who came from there. At least I vaguely remember something from a literature class referencing that.

Besides apologizing for that opening, I have also been remiss in tending to my blogging duties. Been a lot going on at Chez Edwards. As you can see the kitchen make over is not yet 100% complete. Though you can see the new pantry unit in the background and the new counter island and countertop as well.

And if that wasn't enough our house was the logical place to hold my sister-in-law's retirement party. That entailed tending to the yard in ways it had not been attended to in years. Slowly though life is returning to normal and with it my journeys through the world of brews.

The Grey Lady is Cisco Brewery's version of a Belgian style Wit. I like Belgian style beers, especially when the weather starts heating up a bit. But frankly this one left me flat.

It has the color and cloudiness you would expect in a Witbier. And there is the aroma of orange and spices. And it starts with that earthy, spicy flavor.

The only real criticisms I have with this brew is that of balance and longevity. The aroma and the flavor both dissipate too quickly. It starts off well, but blink and it's gone.

And from a balance standpoint I found the spices and fruity flavors were too prominent and overshadowed the hops and malts.

I would certainly have no problem drinking this beer if offered to me, or if it was the only variety left in my refrigerator. But there are certainly better examples of Witbier's out there. And better brews in general.

I give Cisco Brewer's Grey Lady 5 mugs out of 10.

I'm on a mission to sample as many styles and types of beer as possible. I prefer hoppy brews such as IPA's, but like any beer that is tasty.
